Zenit 'close' Arshavin hopes

Zenit St Petersburg have told suitors Tottenham they have missed the deadline to sign playmaker Andrei Arshavin.
The Russian club had given the Londoners until August 18 to put forward their offer for the Euro 2008 star, who will now consider alternative offers from Barcelona and Inter Milan.Tottenham, however, have moved on to other targets as they look to replace Robbie Keane, while Dimitar Berbatov has confirmed his desire to join champions Manchester United.
A statement from Zenit read: "According to agreements, the club (Spurs) had until August 18 to send their proposals. So far these proposals have not been received.
"Given the deadline has expired and the uncertainty of the situation does not allow the club to find a replacement for Andrei Arshavin, Zenit considers the possibility of transferring the player to Tottenham closed."
