Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric has broken his leg and faces a long spell on the sidelines, the club have confirmed.
The confirmation could force manager Harry Redknapp back into the transfer market before the September 1 deadline to bolster a squad that is also missing Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate.
Croatia playmaker Modric was hurt in a collision with Lee Bowyer during the early stages of the second half of Saturday's 2-1 success against Birmingham at White Hart Lane and was replaced by Peter Crouch.
Speaking after the game Redknapp was hoping Modric had only suffered "a nasty injury on the side of the right calf" but X-rays have now shown he has fractured his right fibula.
A Tottenham statement read: "X-rays have determined that Luka Modric sustained a fracture to his right fibula during Saturday's victory over Birmingham City at White Hart Lane."
