Tranmere could face a battle to keep hold of manager Ronnie Moore after he has emerged as an early favourite for the vacant position at Chesterfield.

Moore, who is contracted at Prenton Park until July 2013, has masterminded a dramatic improvement following his return to Rovers in March, saving them from relegation last term and then guiding them to an unbeaten start this season. The Spireites sacked John Sheridan on Monday after a winless start to the campaign and Moore is believed to be on the radar to replace the former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder. Moore, who turned down the opportunity to become Spireites manager when he was in charge of Rotherham in 2000, has already tasted victory at the Proact Stadium this season as his Rovers side were triumphant in the Capital One Cup first-round clash a fortnight ago and still lives locally. Former Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley manager Brian Laws is also thought to be a candidate.
