Striker bid accepted

Watford, 21:38, July 2, 2009

Watford have accepted a bid of £1.8m from an unnamed club for striker Tommy Smith, who will now be allowed to discuss personal terms.

The Hornets have been keen to keep a hold of last season's player of the year, with Malky MacKay describing Smith as one of the top three players in the division.

But this latest offer has proved just too good to turn down and the 29-year-old could be heading out of the exit door at Vicarage Road.

Former boss Brendon Rodgers recently failed with a bid for the former Derby man and although Reading now have more funds at his disposal following the sale of Kevin Doyle to Wolves, it appears this is not an improved offer from the Royals.

Watford chairman Jimmy Russo told the club's website: "We've received a new bid today for Tommy and we will allow him to speak to the club in question.

"This is a new club that has expressed a desire to sign Tommy."
