West Brom are waiting to hear if top manager target Ralf Rangnick is interested in taking over as Belgium national boss.
Former Schalke manager Rangnick remains the favourite for the Baggies post with Birmingham boss Chris Hughton now apparently out of the running.
However, Rangnick is thought to be in the frame for the permanent Belgium job and, if he takes it, Albion will be back to square one in their hunt for a successor to Roy Hodgson.
Reports in Europe say Rangnick is the leading contender to replace interim Belgium boss Marc Wilmots and it could scupper any chance of him taking over at The Hawthorns.
If Rangnick is the next to be ruled out of the running for the Baggies job, then the club will have to turn to other candidates including former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley, Liverpool assistant Steve Clarke and Michael Appleton, who served as Hodgson's right-hand man before his exit to take the England job.
