West Brom boss Tony Mowbray has been told by Rangers manager Walter Smith to forget about a reunion with midfielder Kevin Thomson.
Mowbray worked with Thomson at his old club Hibernian and reports had suggested he was lining up a January offer for the Ibrox star, who arrived in Glasgow in a £2million deal 18 months ago.
Thomson faces extra competition for places in the Rangers engine room in the coming weeks with the return of Barry Ferguson, as well as from in-form pair Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis.
Smith, however, says he wants to keep his best players and has no desire to let Thomson leave for the Premier League new-boys.
"We have got two months before the next transfer window opens," he said.
"There is never any thought in my mind about losing the midfield players we have got here. We need them in the future with the amount of games increasing.
"The good players I have got, I want to keep here.
"With the size of my squad, some players will be leaving but it will not be the ones that are going to take us forward in the future."
