Race on for striker ace

West Bromwich Albion, 14:30, December 4, 2008

Both West Brom boss Tony Mowbray and Derby County chief Paul Jewell are considering loan moves for Arsenal striker Jay Simpson.

Simpson, the 20-year-old Arsenal striker who scored twice on his debut in the Carling Cup tie against Wigan, is close to agreeing a new three-year contract with the club.

The Londoner is seen by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger as having a future at the Emirates Stadium but he may well be allowed out of the club on loan now their interest in the Carling Cup is over following defeat to Burnley.

West Brom's need for a striker is paramount for Mowbray and he will be pushing to land the player but Wenger may decide life in the Championship with Derby might be an easier start for Simpson and afford him more first team opportunities.
