Hammers lose out to Toffees for Lucas

West Ham United, 09:40, September 17, 2009 ,

Everton boss David Moyes has acted quickly to fill the void in his defence by swooping for former West Ham full-back Lucas Neill.

The Toffees chief has been hit by the loss of Joleon Lescott in a £24million switch to Manchester City, while Phil Jagielka is still sidelined with a long-term knee injury. And, despite already signing Sylvain Distin and Johnny Heitinga during the transfer window, skipper Phil Neville was then ruled out for a lengthy spell with another bad knee injury he picked up in last weekend's 2-1 defeat at Fulham.
As a result Moyes has moved to take Australian international defender Neill, who is a free agent after leaving West Ham in the summer, to Goodison Park.
The 31-year-old snubbed the chance to stay with the Hammers, while Sunderland and Atletico Madrid were among a clutch of other clubs linked to him. However Neill is to undergo a medical on Merseyside and is expected to join the Toffees in the near future with a view to him playing against his former club Blackburn on Sunday.
