Youngster leaves on loan

West Ham United, 13:45, January 2, 2009

West Ham defender Joe Widdowson has signed for Grimsby on loan while Brescia starlet Bartosz Salamon could be handed a trial.

Full-back Widowson, 19, has been sent out to Grimsby to get some first-team experience and will stay at Blundell Park for an initial one-month period and should feature for the Mariners against Barnet this weekend.

Widowson played three games while on loan at Rotherham last season but it is thought boss Gianfranco Zola still believes the youngster could have a long-term future at Upton Park.

Meanwhile, highly-rated Brescia teenager Salamon, who is only 17, is reportedly set to be handed a trial by Zola in the next few weeks as the boss looks to add to his squad in January by bringing in young talent from oversees on the cheap.
