Benitez in Bruce's sights

Wigan Athletic, 09:23, November 14, 2008

Wigan boss Steve Bruce hopes to conclude a deal for Ecuador striker Cristian Benitez with Amr Zaki's future in the balance.

Bruce spent the whole summer chasing the loan signature of Egypt star Zaki but his impressive goalscoring form in the Premier League has alerted bigger clubs and Latics need a replacement.

Benitez, 22, has made 17 appearances for his country and is rated in the £10m bracket, with Bruce admitting his wish to sign more British talent is easier said than done.

Bruce told The Mirror: "Benitez is one we're looking at. It's the way forward for us to go and look for another Amr Zaki.

"I'd love to sign five or six Lee Cattermoles at 20 or 21 but it's not possible."
