Chelsea assistant boss Ray Wilkins has admitted the club could sign a striker in January with Wigan's Emile Heskey a reported target.
Wilkins is worried that if the Blues lose both Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka to injury in the second half of the season they have very little experienced cover as back-up.
So he has dropped a big hint a new striker could be brought in in the transfer window with Heskey thought to be on the radar.
Wilkins said: "We have got the injury situation haven't we?
"If you lose both in the same game, you always need cover with injuries. You have to have a top end of your side with goalscoring ability."
Heskey has been linked with a move away from the JJB Stadium for some time after failing to sign a new, long-term contract there but Latics boss Steve Bruce has previously said it would require a huge bid to lure him away next month, despite the fact the England star could walk away for nothing in the summer when his contract is up.
Liverpool and Aston Villa are also monitoring Heskey's situation with a view to making bids in the transfer window.
