Bolivian hitman in Latics switch
Wigan Athletic, 17:45, February 1, 2010 ,
Roberto Martinez insists Shakhtar Donetsk striker Marcelo Moreno can 'become a big player' in England after joining Wigan on loan.
The Latics chief has added the 22-year-old Bolivia international to his forward line in a beat-the-deadline swoop on Monday, having also wrapped up the signing of 19-year-old Victor Moses from Crystal Palace.
Moreno joined Shakhtar on a five-year deal in a big money switch in 2008, but started this season on loan at German Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen. However when that deal was terminated on Friday, Martinez wasted no time in making a bid to take him to the DW Stadium on a six-month loan subject to being granted a visa and international clearance.
"We knew we needed more competition in the forward area and now we have Victor Moses and Marcelo Moreno," he told the club's official website.
"Shakhtar paid €9million for him 18 months ago, which shows you how highly he is regarded, and he has all the ingredients to become a big player in this country.
"He still needs to find his feet in Europe, but we are confident that this will be at Wigan.
"He is young, a superb athlete, good in the air, technically good with both feet and he will add something new to the squad."
Moreno added: "Roberto Martinez sold the club to me and I am determined to come to England and make an impression.
"I want to do everything I can to get in the team and I am now looking forward to meeting all my new team-mates and fighting for my place."
