Bruce stands by his man

Wigan Athletic, 15:24, November 21, 2008 ,

Wigan boss Steve Bruce insists Lee Cattermole's off-field problems last weekend will not affect his chances of captaining the side.

Cattermole is third in line for the armband behind striker Emile Heskey and full-back Mario Melchiot, with both player struggling to shake off injury ahead of the home clash with Everton on Monday.
Cattermole was involved in an incident in the north east after skippering Wigan against Newcastle last Saturday but Bruce says the matter is now ancient history.
"We've dealt with Lee, it's done and dusted now," Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post.
"I think the boy has to learn a lesson about certain areas of his hometown he needs to stay away from. He needs to realise about being in the wrong place at the wrong time."
On his chances of leading the side out against Everton, Bruce added: "It's still possible Lee could be skipper against Everton if Mario and Emile are injured, although Emile could be back.
"If we have the same players out injured, then yes, I'd hand Lee the armband."
