Camara reveals Latics future hope

Wigan Athletic, 11:19, November 26, 2008 ,

Henri Camara is hoping his first Wigan goal in two years will help keep him in the side and boost his chances of securing a new deal.

The 31-year-old Senegal international striker, who joined Latics for a then-club record £3.1million from Wolves in August, 2005, fired in the winning goal against Everton just six minutes after coming off the substitutes' bench at the JJB Stadium on Monday - his first Premier League goal since a penalty at Middlesbrough on December 9, 2006.
Camara has struggled for first-team action with Wigan and endured a nightmare season on loan at West Ham, where he also failed to score, before returning to Latics in the summer. And, having proved what he can do to boss Steve Bruce, he is now hoping to make up for lost time and get a start against West Brom this weekend.
He told the Evening Post: "I feel I need to make up for lost time - at my age I've got to view the last couple of years as being wasted.
"Football is a confidence thing and I'm a goalscorer. That is what I go on the field to do.
"My confidence has taken a real battering, first with the injury in the early part of 2007 which I didn't come back from very well.
"Then what happened at West Ham last season destroyed my confidence levels. I just didn't get the breaks there.
"It wasn't really my decision to go there, but for better or for wrong I didn't feel too welcome here at the time, so I took my chance. In retrospect, that was a mistake.
"This season back at Wigan things haven't been going too well for me either, but when I get a chance I want to do the business.
"I want to get the chance to show what I can do, so Steve Bruce can see me at my best.
"On Saturday I would love to get the chance to start against West Bromwich Albion.
"I'm a confidence player and when I'm fully confident, I know I can hurt teams.
"I don't feel I have reached that level yet. Hopefully I can do so soon."
On the possibility of winning a new contract, Camara added: "This is a club I've always been happy at despite what some people might have said in the past.
"If you are happy, you don't really want to move on. Let's just see what happens."
