Defender's choice for Wigan move
Wigan Athletic, 09:26, June 9, 2009 ,
Wigan defender Paul Scharner looks set to leave the JJB Stadium but says he will not be joining Steve Bruce at Sunderland.
The Austrian defender admits he wants a fresh challenge for next season and a number of clubs including Sunderland and Tottenham have expressed an interest in him.
However, Scharner says he will not be signing for Sunderland because he does not see a move to the Stadium of Light as a step up on the career ladder, while he does not like Bruce's style of play.
"I have decided that I want to change clubs," Scharner revealed. "A lot can happen between now and the transfer deadline at the end of August. My fee is £6million, and there has been interest from four clubs in England and Germany.
"It is a selection process for me, and I am not ruling Germany out. It was a big surprise when Steve Bruce left Wigan for Sunderland, he had long sworn that he would be staying put.
"But I can't see myself joining Sunderland. In footballing terms, they are certainly not an improvement on Wigan. Besides, I did not get on too well with Bruce's style of play."
