Roberto Martinez is already close to bringing new faces into Wigan despite only being confirmed as manager on Monday evening.
The Spanish tactician got the green light to succeed Steve Bruce in the DW Stadium hot seat when Latics and Swansea finally agreed a compensation package for his backroom team to follow him out of the Liberty Stadium to Lancashire. And chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that the task of team strengthening is now underway and a bid for a Spanish-based player - thought to be Espanyol's Jordi Gomes - has already been made.
"I asked him (Martinez) on Saturday for a priority list of players and he gave us four priorities," Whelan told Sky Sports News.
"We have already made a bid for one, which I think has been accepted, so we are on the case. It's a player from the Spanish league.
"I have promised Roberto that we will back him right down the line, so we have got an exciting season coming up that's for sure."
Meanwhile, Martinez, who has signed a three-year deal at the club where he made 226 appearances as a midfielder, is looking forward to building on Bruce's good work.
"The club has done incredibly well over the past five years, firstly getting into the Premier League and staying there," he told the official club website.
"Then last year Wigan pushed higher up the table. I want to carry on the good work Steve Bruce did here.
"I cannot wait for my first game. It seems like a long time away but there is a lot of work to do before then.
"The club has always been close to my heart. I am looking forward to getting stuck in and taking on teams in the best league in the world."
Martinez added: "So much has changed and there have been fantastic improvements both on and off the pitch.
"I am really looking forward to working again with the chairman and everyone at the club and I am sure we can build on what has already been achieved."
