Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has hit out at Hugo Rodallega's agent after the striker walked away as a free agent.
Latics were keen to get the Colombian striker tied down to a new contract but it soon became clear the player would not be staying at the DW Stadium and Whelan says it is the fault of the agent.
Wigan were ready to offer Rodallega a bumper new deal but his agent convinced him more cash would be available if he moved on and the player refused to put pen-to-paper.
Whelan says all agents are not the same but believes Rodallega's did not have the player's interests at heart and was more concerned with lining his own pockets with cash.
"It's agents who blow in their ear and say 'I can get you so much money.' Sometimes the lads must realise their agent wants the money more than they do, and it tends to spoil the game at times," Whelan revealed.
"Their agent comes along and says 'Don't re-sign for Wigan, I can get you a big fee or big fat wages if you go there,' and the agent gets a nice big fat fee.
"And that's what's important to the agent. Not all of them - you've got one or two who have the players here at heart, which they should have, because it's the players who count.
"The agents unfortunately get greedier and greedier every year, and spoil the footballer. They spoil his image, they divert his career at times when he doesn't want it diverting, all in the cause of cash."
