Latics firm over ace - for now
Wigan Athletic, 09:37, December 14, 2009 ,
Wigan have told Sunderland they will have to wait until the summer if they want Maynor Figueroa as he will not be sold next month.
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce has made the left-back one of his top targets and he only just missed out on signing him before the transfer window closed in the summer.
Bruce is said to be lining up another move in January but Wigan boss Roberto Martinez says he is staying put.
"Obviously we don't want to lose our best performers. Maynor has been outstanding all season, he's been a true professional as well," said Martinez.
"He's got the World Cup in front of him next summer with Honduras and I don't think a change of club would be such a good idea for him before such a big event in his career."
However, it looks as though a deal could be struck at the end of the season when Martinez revealed the player could move on.
"Might he go in the summer? Probably but until then we'll keep enjoying the quality of his defending and the quality of his free-kicks," the Spaniard added.
