Wigan defender Gary Caldwell says the club have to kick on next season and stay well away from the relegation zone.

Latics have stayed up with a game to spare this season after surviving on the last day in the previous campaign, but Caldwell says the club cannot continue to struggle at the wrong end of the table and must look to kick on. Wigan will no doubt be among the bookies favourites for the drop next season as well but Caldwell says they will be looking to climb well away from trouble. "Hopefully this is a platform to kick on and be a major force next year," he told BBC Radio Manchester. "We have to build on it now. Last year we stayed up on the last day and we tried to build on it but we got off to a sticky start again and had to dig in to stay in this league." Caldwell says it is difficult to explain why Wigan went on an amazing run including wins over Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal, but admits that team-spirit will have played a big part. "If I could put my finger on it I would be the manager," he added. "I think the team has come together, there's a lot of young players that are learning all the time. As a football club we are learning and progressing."
