Match-winner aims high for Latics
Wigan Athletic, 12:54, January 12, 2009 ,
Maynor Figueroa has not ruled out a push for a European spot at Wigan after his header sealed a late 1-0 home win against Tottenham.
The Honduras international left-back climbed high to meet Ryan Taylor's corner in the 91st-minute and grab his first goal in Latics' colours to make it six wins in seven Premier League games for boss Steve Bruce's men. And, while the £1.5million signing from Deportivo Olimpia was not going to promise a goals glut now he has broken his duck, he feels Latics have the credentials to make a challenge for at least a UEFA Cup spot in the second half of the season.
Figueroa told the Evening Post: "How high can we go? Who knows? At the moment we are up there with the top teams and the aspiration has to be to stay up there.
"We're a relatively small club but we're looking for big things and this is a good challenge for us."
In the meantime Bruce's men are focusing on reaching the magic 40 points barrier to be certain of top-flight football next term and anything else gained between now and the end of May will be looked upon as a huge bonus.
