Pollitt pens new Wigan deal

Wigan Athletic, 09:50, July 10, 2008 ,

Mike Pollitt has been urged to challenge number one goalkeeper Chris Kirkland after signing a new one-year deal with Wigan.

Pollitt made just one Premier League appearance last season, at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal, and also played in the League Cup against Hull City and in the FA Cup at Sunderland.
However, manager Steve Bruce said he had no hesitation offering the 36-year-old a new deal and urged him to try and oust Kirkland as his first-choice goalkeeper.
Bruce told the official club website: "Polly's a terrific goalkeeper and I'd have no hesitation in playing him in any game.
"He understands the situation that Chris has possession of the shirt at the minute
"But that can change and you need at least two good goalkeepers competing, to bring the best out in each other.
"At the moment we have three, with Carlo Nash. I'm delighted he's agreed to stay with us for another year because he's a character and a great lad to have around the dressing room".
Pollitt said: "I really like it here, it's a good club and there's a great team spirit. Steve Bruce has breathed new life into the place over the past six months and it's a real happy ship at the moment."
