Roberto to wield axe on defender

Wigan Athletic, 17:15, November 26, 2009 ,

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez could recall Maynor Figueroa after Erik Edman failed to impress in the 9-1 loss to Spurs last week.

The Honduras international is ahead of schedule for a comeback from a knee injury and could be risked after Edman's failure to stop Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon running riot last week.
Wigan's statistics from the White Hart Lane debacle showed one defender failed to make a single tackle during the match and, while no-one is officially pointing the finger at Edman, he looks like the likely fall guy for the visit of Sunderland.
Martinez is keen to get Figueroa back anyway because during his three-game absence Wigan have conceded 14 goals - including four to bottom side Portsmouth.
"Maynor is still not 100% fit. Emmerson Boyce could play there, Charles N'Zogbia is a left-back but he's more attacking and he doesn't like to play there," said Martinez.
"But we have two sessions to see how Maynor is developing. I would say he is 90%.
"I wouldn't risk him but I'd hope we could make a proper judgement as 48 hours is a big thing."
