Swans rebuff Martinez approach

Wigan Athletic, 14:12, June 3, 2009

Wigan are struggling to agree a compensation package with Swansea for Roberto Martinez as Steve Bruce is poised to join Sunderland.

Bruce is expected to be named as Sunderland's new manager within the next 24 hours as the Black Cats put the finishing touches to the deal and Wigan are keen to get Martinez in as a replacement.
Wigan made an approach for the Spanish tactician on Tuesday night but were told by Swans chairman Huw Jenkins they would have to pay £2million in compensation.
Latics are reluctant to pay such a figure and it seems there is plenty of negotiating to be done before a deal can be agreed.
"Wigan asked for permission to speak to Roberto. They asked what compensation we would be looking for and we talked about different figures," Jenkins said.
"I told them what I valued Roberto at and they told me what they thought - we were miles apart to say the least. I have not given them permission to talk to Roberto."

As soon as Steve Bruce's future is decided we will send out mobile alerts on our new service.
