Top scorer return boost for Latics
Wigan Athletic, 10:55, December 5, 2008 ,
Steve Bruce has been handed a major selection boost ahead of Wigan's trip to Arsenal as top scorer Amr Zaki is fit to feature.
The 25-year-old nine-goal Egyptian hitman has been missing for Latics' last three matches due to hamstring trouble, but has finally recovered in time for a tough trip to face the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Ironically Zaki's last outing was the 3-0 Carling Cup defeat on the same ground last month and Bruce is delighted to have him back.
He said: "It has taken Zaki a little while to get over the injury but there again it was a hamstring.
"We have nursed him through it so he should be OK for the game on Saturday."
Zaki has built up a good understanding with Emile Heskey since arriving on a year-long loan from El Zamalek in the summer. And Bruce is hoping to beat the odds and ensure both players stay put at the JJB Stadium in the transfer window.
He added: "We only have a small squad, but we have a bit of quality in there.
"My problem is trying to keep hold of the ones I've got. That is going to be my biggest challenge.
"We have people here who are coveted by a lot of teams. We have some good players.
"We are just starting to go along quite nicely. You want to add to the squad rather than dismantle it."
Meanwhile defender Paul Scharner could come into contention after a groin problem caused him to miss last week's win against West Brom.
