Whelan delighted with Martinez appointment
Wigan Athletic, 12:19, June 16, 2009 ,
Chairman Dave Whelan believes Roberto Martinez will be a success at Wigan after he was confirmed the new Latics boss.
Martinez has finally been named as Steve Bruce's successor at the DW Stadium after a compensation package was agreed with Swansea City and Whelan says the Spaniard was always the man he wanted at the helm.
"Roberto was always my number one choice. I have always liked him and taken notice of how he is getting on," Whelan said.
"What he has achieved at Swansea, getting them promoted and almost reaching the play-offs, is a remarkable achievement and shows to me he has the skills and quality we need to be a success here."
Latics finished a creditable 11th in the Premier League last season under Bruce and Whelan will be hoping his new manager can at least match that achievement next term.
But punters using their free bet may be persuaded to back Wigan to enjoy an even better campaign under Martinez and improve on their 45 points tally from last season.
