Wigan set for Williams war
Wigan Athletic, 18:11, April 26, 2011
Wigan, West Brom and Newcastle are understood to be tracking Swansea's highly-rated Wales international defender Ashley Williams.
The 26-year-old has been in outstanding form for Brendan Rodgers' side this season and was voted into the PFA Championship team of the year for the second season running by his fellow professionals.
That form, and his displays for Wales, have caught the attention of the Premier League and Wigan could have serious competition for his signature when the transfer window reopens in July.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is thought to be a big fan of his while West Brom have also begun to track him since Roy Hodgson took over.
The Baggies released Williams, who is from the Black Country, as a teenager and he had to start his career in non-league with Hednesford Town.
Queens Park Rangers and Old Firm giants Celtic are also thought to be big admirers of the talented defender.
However, Latics boss Roberto Martinez may have the edge on his rivals because he worked with Williams during his managerial spell at Swansea and maintains close ties with the player today.
