Wigan have doubts over both Chris Kirkland and Emile Heskey ahead of the clash with Newcastle, with late decisions to be made.
Goalkeeper Kirkland suffered a back problem in Tuesday's Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal and the Latics will give him as long as possible to prove his fitness ahead of the trip to St James' Park.
The former Liverpool shot-stopper has been ordered by the Wigan medical team for the remainder of the week and Steve Bruce has his fingers crossed that the injury will clear up.
Meanwhile, Heskey is said to be rated 50-50 to face Joe Kinnear's men as he continues to battle against a calf problem picked up in the goalless draw with Stoke.
The England striker missed the defeat at the Emirates and Henri Camara is on stand-by to replace him against Newcastle.
