Giroud discusses transfer U-turn

Olivier Giroud has confirmed he came close to leaving Arsenal this summer before deciding his "story" at the club was not finished.

The France international has played a diminished role with the Gunners over the past year, often starting matches on the bench last term, with Alexis Sanchez preferred as the lone striker

Having seemingly slipped further down the pecking order following the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette during the summer, it was widely speculated the 30-year-old would look to leave the Emirates Stadium.

Giroud attracted plenty of interest from the likes of Marseille and Everton but ultimately decided to stay in north London, claiming it was the advice of friends and family that helped to make up his mind.

When asked about leaving Arsenal, Giroud said: "That’s a very private decision because, it’s true, I was close.

"I said I wanted to play but after reflecting with everybody around me – my family and my friends – I wanted to stay at Arsenal.

"I thought the story was not over at Arsenal. The club has given me a lot and I want to give it back, improve and win more trophies.

"I said to the boss 'our story is not finished' and everyone was pleased with that."
