The 23-year-old was cautioned by referee Mike Dean during the 1-0 loss against Aston Villa on Monday and he will now miss two crucial games against relegation candidates Reading and QPR.
The former Leeds United man believes that the physical nature of the game has changed during his short career and feels that some of the bookings he has received this season have been unfair.
Delph has been quick to defend his actions, stating that he has never set out to harm another player but believes it is OK to have a combative approach to the game.
"I like to be competitive and there are a lot of players who play that way," said Delph.
"I think it is a dying breed now. Football is a lot more technical and a bit more sensible.
"Referees have got a bit soft and it's something I'll look to curb."
