New name in frame for Villa buy-out
Aston Villa, Updated:
Israeli-born American cruise ship tycoon Micky Arison is the latest name in the frame to become the new owner of Aston Villa.
The 64-year-old billionaire has emerged as a potential candidate to buy out current US owner Randy Lerner who is looking for a quick £200million sale of the club he bought from Doug Ellis for £62.6 million in summer 2006.
Arison, who has owned Miami Heat basketball franchise since 1995, sparked rumours that he is preparing a move for Villa after he sold almost £60million in shares of Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator which he is a co-founder of, since March.
However, when Arison's chief spokesperson Jennifer de la Cruz, was asked about any potential interest in buying Villa, she said: "As a general rule, we do not comment on such rumors [sic]."
Kazakhstan businessman Tevfik Arif, who is a close friend of US billionaire Donald Trump, had previously been mentioned as a possible buyer but nothing has developed on that front.
