The Tykes had suffered back-to-back defeats on the road before adding to Portsmouth's troubles and although only 9,336 saw goals from Jim O'Brien and Matt Done lift Barnsley up to 14th in the table, Hill praised their contribution.
Hill said: "We were quite nervous and I can understand that. But it was brilliant for us with respect to a must-win game.
"We weren't as creative or as fluid as I expected to be. We were very patient and the supporters were patient and that has a massive impact. You've got to applaud their patience."
