Smith injury jinx strikes again

Brad Smith's international injury jinx struck again as the defender went off during Australia's World Cup play-off win over Syria.

The Cherries' full-back could be set for a spell on the sidelines after going to ground just eight minutes into the fixture in Sydney, reportedly with a hip problem.

Smith was replaced by Huddersfield's Aaron Mooy and had to watch from the sidelines as the Socceroos clinched their spot in an intercontinental play-off, courtesy of Tim Cahill's header in extra-time.

News of Smith's problem is just another blow to boss Eddie Howe, who has lost striker Joshua King and winger Ryan Fraser to injuries during the current international break.

Left-back Smith was previously ruled out of the Confederations Cup after sustaining a hamstring injury in a World Cup qualifying win over Saudi Arabia last summer.
