The left-back picked up a hamstring injury in the 2-1 victory over Coventry and will now be sidelined for two weeks.
Manager Gus Poyet is also deprived of the services of Vicente Rodriguez (thigh) and Gonzalo Jara Reyes (knee).
Poyet revealed the club was looking into why there had been a spate of injuries in the squad.
"Marcos is a fit lad and the injuries he's had in the past are all from bad tackles or other contact injuries so we are looking for reasons behind the recent injuries," he told the club's official website.
Player-assistant manager Mauricio Taricco will complete his two-game ban, Gary Dicker continues to recovery from his fractured leg, and Tommy Elphick (Achilles) is still some way short of fitness.
