Coman hoping to provide Bayern spark

Kingsley Coman says he wants to be the man to help fill the void left by Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery at Bayern Munich this season.

Robben and Ribery both opted to leave Bayern at the end of last season after a decade playing alongside each other at the Allianz Arena.

The duo won a combined total of 42 major trophies during their time with Bayern and both played a major role in the club’s treble success during the 2012-13 campaign.

Despite their influence on the pitch subsiding during their final few years at Bayern, their departures have still left big holes within Niko Kovac’s squad.

France international Coman has been one of the players to step up over the opening weeks of the new season.

The 23-year-old has scored one goal and provided three assists in his three Bundesliga appearances to date this term, while he also netted twice for France during the international break.

The former Juventus youngster looks set to play a major role for Bayern this season and is more than happy to take on the extra responsibility following Robben’s and Ribery’s departures.

“I’m not really about status. I want to help my team and, above all, win. I want to be there in terms of stats, but also in the game itself – I want to provide the spark for the team,” Coman told L’Equipe.

“Beyond that, if I’m playing all the time and I’m helping the team to win, then star status will come.”
