Gotze told to prove himself by BVB chief
Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre says Mario Gotze will need to prove he’s worthy of a place in his starting line-up this season.
The Germany international made a triumphant return to the Westfalenstadion in the summer of 2016 but has struggled for game time, managing just 28 Bundesliga starts.
Previously, his lack of game time has been down to injury but this season Favre has a fully-fit Gotze at his disposal but has choosen to leave him on the bench for BVB’s first two league matches.
The 26-year-old’s only appearance so far has come in the DFB Pokal and Favre admits it is tough to find a role for the World Cup winner given his prefered 4-3-3 system.
‘I think it depends on our system,’ he told a news conference. ‘I said that it would take time for us to find our best team and our best system. There are a lot of tactical decisions to be made.
‘We have to tell the truth. Mario can play in a central position. He can play in our 4-3-3 system. You have to play athletically and with a lot of dedication.
‘Against Leipzig and Hannover, we played with three players in central midfield. Mario can play in one of those positions, but we have many players that can play there.’
