Sommer urges Gladbach to respond quickly

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer says there is no time for Borussia Monchengladbach to dwell on Friday's 3-1 defeat at Freiburg.

Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer has urged his team to produce an immediate response to their defeat to Wolfsberger AC.

Marco Rose’s men had gone into the game as the favourites but they were left stunned by their Austrian opponents.

Gladbach never found their rhythm on home soil at Borussia-Park and they were eventually beaten 4-0 by Wolfsberger AC.

Shon-Zalman Weismann opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Mario Leitgib grabbed the first of his two goals.

Marcel Ritzmaier also got on the scoresheet before half-time, with Leitgib grabbing his second after the break, and Gladbach now have it all to do in Group J.

Roma and Istanbul Basaksehir complete their group in the Europa League and Sommer says they face a fight to progress if they do not respond at the first time of asking.

He told the club’s official website: “The pressure is definitely higher now after the loss. We had planned on starting the group stage with a strong showing at home. We weren’t able to do so, and now we need to put the loss behind us as quickly as possible. We want to be successful in the Europa League. Playing the way we did last night is not the way to go.

“We need to give something back to our fans this weekend. The way that they continued to support us last night is great and cannot be taken for granted after the way that we played.”

Gladbach are back in action in the Bundesliga on Sunday and will look to climb into the top six when they take on Fortuna Dusseldorf.
