Zakaria dreaming of Bundesliga title

Midfielder Denis Zakaria believes Borussia Monchengladbach can win the Bundesliga title although he knows there is still a long way to go this season.

Swiss international Zakaria has formed the cornerstone of the Gladbach team so far this term, featuring in all 11 of their league matches, including the full 90 minutes of Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Werder Bremen.

That result preserved Die Fohlen’s four-point lead over RB Leipzig at the top of the standings, while defending champions Bayern Munich are a further point back and the highly-fancied Borussia Dortmund are six off the pace.

Confidence is certainly high within the Gladbach camp following seven wins from their last eight league games and Zakaria feels his side can mount a serious challenge for what would be their first Bundesliga title since 1977.

“The title? Why not?,” the 22-year-old told the Bundesliga official website. “But it’s a really long road so we’re taking it game by game and we’ll see.

“We’re enjoying a really good spell right now. We’re top of the table with a four-point lead, but we need to keep working hard. If we keep doing so then we can stay top for a lot longer. Things are just going well at the moment.”

Marco Rose’s side will return to action after the international break with a trip to Union Berlin before they face back-to-back home games against high-flying Freiburg and Bayern; fixtures that could potentially define their season.
