Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has revealed they tried to sign Real Madrid's Martin Odegaard over the summer.
The 17-year-old was snapped up by Los Blancos for a reported four million euros in January 2015 from Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset.
However, the promising youngster has been restricted to mostly turning out for Real Madrid B although he has made one appearance for the senior side.
Reports claimed that Liverpool were keen on bringing him in on loan over the summer, while Eberl has confirmed that Gladbach were also in the race for his services.
The Gladbach sporting director said: “We could not convince him and his father that it would be best for him to start his professional career at our club. Where his talent could be promoted and developed and where he would have had more chances to play at the highest level.”
