Gomez joined Wolfsburg a year ago from Besiktas and played a key role in their successful bid to avoid relegation with ten goals in the final 12 games as they escaped the drop via the play-offs.
The 32-year-old has been made the skipper by coach Andries Jonker, following former captain Diego Benaglio's switch to Monaco, and Gomez has welcomed the additional responsibility.
"I understand every player when he says it’s a dream to be named captain of your team," he told Kicker.
"It’s something very special and it means you’re doing a good job. However, I don’t need to wear the armband as some sort of symbol or recognition. I’ve always had a close relationship with the coaches I’ve played for in my career without being captain."
