Hannover wrap up defender deal

Hannover have completed the signing of Stoke defender Kevin Wimmer, who arrives on a season-long loan deal.

Hannover finished 13th in the Bundesliga last season and Wimmer is expected to be the first of several new signings as they look to improve their fortunes next season.

If all goes according to plan Wimmer could stay long-term after a statement from Stoke said the loan agreement ‘carries the potential for the deal to be made permanent’.

The 25-year-old Austrian centre-back signed for the Potters from Tottenham for £18million in August 2017 but made only 19 appearances in all competitions as Stoke headed out of the top flight.

Wimmer had not featured for the Potters since their 3-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester United in January and he last played for all 90 minutes in the FA Cup defeat to Coventry in the same month.

The Welsh-born defender arrived in England when Spurs recruited him from Cologne in May 2015 but he spent most of his time with the London outfit on the bench until Stoke came calling last summer.
