Wagner feeling ‘lucky’ after Mainz victory
David Wagner said his Schalke side were “lucky” to defeat Mainz 2-1 in Friday’s Bundesliga clash at the Veltins-Arena.
Die Konigsblauen coach watched as his side went ahead on 36 minutes when former Mainz academy player Suat Serdar converted after being set up by Amine Harit.
Mainz seemed set to snatch a share of the spoils as substitute Karim Onisiwo levelled against the run of play with just 15 minutes remaining.
However, Schalke were handed their third consecutive Bundesliga win when 22-year-old Morocco international, Harit, scored in the 89th minute.

The result moves Schalke into second position on 10 points, behind in-form leaders RB Leipzig on goal difference.
Speaking afterwards, Wagner said: “Mainz played well and deservedly got their equaliser. There was a lot of energy in the stadium in the last five minutes and the Nordkurve really played its part.
“I could really sense the belief that we could win the game – and we managed to do so thanks to Amine. We were lucky to win the game, as it wasn’t a particularly great performance.”
