Schalke starlet taking inspiration from Sancho

Rabbi Matondo is convinced that he made the correct decision in leaving Manchester City to join Schalke in January.

Schalke’s rising star Rabbi Matondo says he has taken inspiration from Jadon Sancho and says he too wants to be a success in the Bundesliga.

Wales winger Matondo, like Sancho, was part of the Manchester City academy before deciding to make the move to Germany.

Sancho has impressed with his performances at Borussia Dortmund since leaving the Citizens in 2017, while the 19-year-old scored his first Schalke goal in the 3-1 victory at RB Leipzig last month.

Having seen Sancho grow his game in the Bundesliga, Matondo is hoping he too can develop and become a big name in the German top flight going forward.

“It’s only one goal and it’s only my first start of the season,” said the Liverpool-born youngster. “But hopefully I can get many more minutes this season and contribute with goals and assists and help the team climb the table.

“If I can do as well as he (Sancho) has done so far then I will be really happy. He is a great player. I have always known that since being at Manchester City with him how good he can be and how good he will be. Hopefully he can help me as well.”

Matondo is currently away from Germany on international duty, having been recalled to Ryan Giggs’ Wales squad for the upcoming European Qualifiers against Slovakia and Croatia.
