Werder Bremen have play down speculation suggesting Louis van Gaal is in the running to become the club's next manager.
Bremen confirmed last weekend they had parted company with Viktor Skripnik after losing their first three Bundesliga matches of the campaign, following on from a mixed end to the previous season as they narrowly avoided relegation.
Interim coach Alexander Nouri was unable to stop the rot on Wednesday as they lost 2-1 to Mainz and the race is now on to find a permanent successor.
Several names been linked with the position, including United States assistant coach Andreas Herzog and former Hoffenheim boss Markus Gidsol, but the most notable inclusion on the list of candidates is that of former Manchester United and Bayern manager Van Gaal.
The Dutchman is currently out of work after leaving United at the end of last season but Bremen have distanced themselves from rumours linking them with Van Gaal.
"I won't comment on any names, no matter how crazy the rumours are," said sporting director Frank Baumann.
