The Belgium international continued his recovery from a hamstring strain by playing 70 minutes of a midweek friendly, but he is short of match fitness and Dyche admits he is unsure if he will make the squad for the clash at the Stadium of Light.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson is still out with a medial ligament injury and Dyche has revealed the winger has been sent to see a specialist with his knee having not responded to treatment as well as the Clarets would hope.
Dean Marney (knee) is a long-term absentee and remains on the sidelines.
Burnley head to the north-east still searching for their first away win of the season but Dyche says there were signs during the 2-1 loss at Liverpool last time out that his players are close to winning on the road.
He told reporters: “The performance against Liverpool was a marker, the sight of Liverpool kicking it in the corners and wasting time, and bringing Lucas on for a striker, which you don’t see them do often, was a backhanded mark of respect.
“There were a lot of good signs. We’ve got to keep creating and scoring goals. The fine details have gone against us, but we’re not a million miles away. “We were pleased with a lot of things at Liverpool. It was a huge step forward after Swansea, we got back to what we are about.”
Provisional squad: Heaton, Robinson, Pope, Lowton, Keane, Mee, Long, Ward, Darikwa, Tarkowski, Brady, Barton, Flanagan, Boyd, Hendrick, Westwood, Arfield, Vokes, Gray, Agyei.
