Burnley manager Sean Dyche has confirmed Joey Barton is in contention to make his comeback in the FA Cup third round tie at Sunderland.
The midfielder, who played a big role in the Clarets' Championship title-winning campaign last season, has re-signed after a turbulent few months at Rangers.
Barton played the full 90 minutes for Burnley's development squad against Fleetwood at the Barnfield Training Centre on Tuesday.
"There are no guarantees but Joey could be part of the pack," said Dyche at his press conference on Thursday.
"We will see how he does in training. He was a massive player for us last season but it's a different level of football now we're in the Premier League and he has to earn the right to get a game - he knows that."
Barton is clear to play at the Stadium of Light after a one-match suspension imposed by the Scottish Football Association was served during Monday's Premier League defeat at Manchester City.
