Bristol City have confirmed defender Ashley Williams has signed a deal to stay with the club until the end of the season.

Veteran centre-back Williams joined the Robins as a free agent over the summer after his contract with Everton expired.

The Championship outfit initially handed over a deal until the middle of January but the two parties have now agreed an extension.

Head coach Lee Johnson told the club’s official website: “Ashley has made an important contribution both as a player and a mentor to the younger players in the side given his knowledge and experience.

“It was an initial short-term contract to see whether it was right for Ashley and ourselves, which it certainly has been, and I am pleased that he is with us until the end of the season.”

The 35-year-old has started nine Championship games for the promotion hopefuls in 2019-20, scoring in the 2-2 draw at Barnsley on Friday.

Williams spent last season on loan with Stoke after falling out of favour at parent club Everton and was then allowed to leave Goodison Park at the end of the campaign.

The Ashton Gate outfit have been knocking on the door of the play-offs for the past few seasons and are expected to be among those challenging for a top-six spot again this season.

They currently sit in sixth place after losing just twice this season, three points shy of leaders Preston, and return to action on Saturday with a trip to Cardiff.
