Addicks working hard to secure Matthews signature

Charlton Athletic
Sunderland have announced the departures ofAdam Matthews, Luke Molyneux, Max Stryjek and Robbin Ruiter.

Charlton’s head of recruitment and director Steve Gallen says talks are ongoing with free agent Adam Matthews.

Wales international Matthews is without a club after his contract at League One outfit Sunderland expired this summer but he could be handed a chance to kick-start his career at The Valley.

Lee Bowyer is eager to bring in a new right-back and the Addicks are in negotiations with the 27-year-old about a possible switch to the Championship side, who are sitting second in the league after six games.

Speaking about the possibility of a deal being agreed, Gallen, who revealed free agent Tyrone Mears is not a target, confirmed there could be a fresh start on the horizon for the former Celtic ace

He told The South London Press: “We are speaking to Adam Matthews’ agent about doing something. There is nothing concrete yet, but I think we can get some common ground between us.

“If we do that then that will be our last signing. There are a few free transfers about and there is one other right-back, which is not Tyrone Mears. There is a will on both sides to do it. It’s just finding that common ground.”
