Cocu happy to bide his time with Marriott

Derby manager Phillip Cocu says it's unlikely they will be able to re-sign Harry Wilson, Mason Mount or Fikayo Tomori on loan.

Derby County manager Phillip Cocu has confirmed forward Jack Marriott is a doubt for the clash with West Brom this weekend.

Cocu has decided to bide his time with Marriott after he suffered a thigh injury in pre-season.

He was a used substitute in the last three league games, and he scored in Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to Bristol City.

The Dutchman, who replaced Frank Lampard in the summer, believes Marriott is still not ready for a start in the Championship, but he thinks he could make an impact off the bench.

He told the Daily Telegraph: “I think there is still a little way to go (until he can start).

“Missing a big part of pre-season, it’s tough to catch up because of the danger of getting another injury or dropping back again and being even further behind the others.

“I talk a lot with him and the medical staff. So we work hard, all parties, to get him in the best shape as soon as possible.”

Cocu has also been without fellow forward Duane Holmes, but the former Scunthorpe United ace will return to play for the Under-23s next week.

A groin injury has delayed his return to the fold, but he will play for Darren Wassall’s development side on Friday in their latest league fixture at Tottenham Hotspur.
