Tykes eye Villa star

Barnsley are reported to be lining up a swoop for Aston Villa midfielder Gary Gardner before the transfer window closes.

Gardner has struggled to break into the Villa side on a regular basis and has spent much of his time out on loan at clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday.

Tykes boss Paul Heckingbottom is keen to add another midfielder to his ranks before the transfer deadline passes, and Gardner is said to be a target.

Villa are keen to sell on a permanent basis but Barnsley will face strong competition from elsewhere with Forest also keen to take him back following two successful loan spells.

That would put them in pole position to sign the box-to-box midfielder, but reports claim Barnsley are in with a shout of striking a deal.
