Elito at the double

Dagenham Redbridge

Two goals from Medy Elito earned Dagenham a vital 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Macclesfield.

The Daggers dominated the first half and edged ahead after 15 minutes when Elito skipped away from Carl Tremarco and Colin Daniel and shot past keeper Richard O’Donnell, with the help of a heavy deflection off Tony Diagne.

They had chances to double the lead through Luke Howell, Michael Spillane and John Akinde, but the trio were all thwarted by the busy O’Donnell.

Macclesfield rarely threatened in the first half, with George Donnelly miscuing their best opportunity harmlessly wide. But the Silkmen started the second period well and Matt Smith forced a smart save from Chris Lewington.

Midway through the second half, Matthew Hamshaw’s free-kick found Matt Smith, who headed against the crossbar and the rebound from Donnelly was brilliantly pushed away by Lewington.

Jon Nurse went close in the dying minutes but Elito wrapped the points up deep into stoppage time, racing away from Lewis Chalmers and seeing his shot fumbled by O’Donnell.
